My daughter was born and raised in Nova Scotia to two Newfoundland parents. After University she moved to the Great Canadian West, where she met a young man from the Codroy Valley in Newfoundland. They married, and eventually started their family.
Of course having a child meant having a babysitter so one sought, checked out thoroughly and hired. She was a great babysitter but she grew restless and wanted a job outside of her home so she resigned, asking my daughter and her husband if they would give her a reference. "Sure", they said.
The cell phone of my son-in-law rang for him one day while he was at work.It was someone asking for a reference for Julie the babysitter.
"Yep ,she’s good," said Lance, "to tellthetruthitsickensmetoloseher!"
His fast Newfoundland brogue was on really fast forward that day. Finally he got the message across. Then more questions, finally he said "Lookwhydon’tyoujusthireherandfindoutforyourselfjusthowgoodsheis!!"
The gentleman said his thanks and that was that.
My daughter called Julie to tell her that they had called for a reference so the company must be processing her application.
"Oh," says Julie, "I got the job. I start tomorrow. It was really fast hey?"
Yes it was fast ,but not as fast as the reference they had been given!!
